Ocimum tenuiflorum – Holy Basil

This is commonly used in Ayurveda, and in Sri Lanka for more than 2500 years. Holy Basil has been used in Hela Wedakama (Indigenous Medicine)

Holy Basil has broad-spectrum antimicrobial (including antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, antiprotozoal, antimalarial, anthelmintic), anti-diarrheal, antioxidant, anticataract, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, neuroprotective, cardioprotective, anticarcinogenic, antipyretic, antiasthmatic and anticoagulant activities.

It is used to treat a number of diseases such as anxiety, cough, asthma, diarrhea, fever, dysentery, arthritis, eye diseases, otalgia, indigestion, vomiting, cardiac and genitourinary disorders, back pain, skin diseases, ringworm, malaria, insect, snake, and scorpion bites.

Justicia adhatoda – Malabar Nut

This is a shrub used by Asian and European medical practitioners. Justicia adhatoda has been used by Indian and Sri Lankan traditional systems of medicine for more than 2500 years.

Malabar Nut has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and bronchodilator effects. A derivative of vasicine, bromhexine has been shown to pose mucus liquefying/expectorant activity. Justicia adhatoda for respiratory problems:

Parts of Justicia adhatoda is used to treat cough, colds, asthma, bronchitis and tuberculosis.

Justicia adhatoda for arthritis:

Justicia adhatoda has anti-inflammatory properties. It is good for joint pain and helps to subsidize arthritis swelling.

Zingiber officinale - Ginger

Ginger has a very long history of use in various forms of traditional and alternative medicine. The unique fragrance and flavor of ginger come from its natural oils, the most important of which is gingerol.

Ginger has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antiviral properties. Consumption of Ginger reduces gas, improves digestion, relieves nausea, supports the immune system, relieves pain, supports cardiovascular health, and lowers cancer risks.

Ginger is used to treating various skin disorders, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

Coriandrum sativum - Coriander

Coriander is a very old herb, known as far back 5000 BC, and originated in Italy. It has antibacterial and antiviral effects. Consumption of coriander lowers blood sugar levels, boosts immunity, improves heart health, protects the brain, promotes digestion, and improves kidney functioning.

Allium sativum - Garlic

For thousands of years, Garlic was believed to have medicinal properties. Science has now confirmed it. Garlic has antioxidant, antiviral, and antibacterial effects. In addition, it detoxifies heavy metals in the human body.

Garlic protects the human body against various illnesses including the common cold. Further, it reduces blood pressure and improves cholesterol levels which may lower the risk of heart disease. Interestingly Garlic contains antioxidants that may help prevent Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Consumption of Garlic improves bone health.

Acorus calamus - Sweet flag

Acorus calamus, a tall, perennial, grass-like monocot plant from the Acoraceae family, is a well-known plant in Indian and Sri Lankan traditional medicines for centuries. It is a highly valued herb as it acts as a rejuvenator for the brain and nervous system.

Sweet flag has antispasmodic, carminative, anti- inflammatory, immunomodulatory, antioxidant, anticonvulsant, and neuroprotective effects. Additionally, it improves memory power and intellect.

Sweet flag is used to treat epilepsy, mental ailments, chronic diarrhea, dysentery, fever, abdominal tumors, kidney troubles, liver troubles, and rheumatism.

Theobroma cacao - Cocoa

Cocoa is thought to have first been used by the Mayan civilization of Central America. Today, cocoa is most famous for its role in chocolate production. However, modern research has revealed that it does indeed contain important compounds that can benefit your health. Cocoa is rich in Polyphenols.

Cocoa has the highest antioxidant effect. It has antiviral and broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. And cocoa is known to activate natural immunity in the human body.

Consumption of cocoa reduces high blood pressure by improving nitric oxide levels, lowers the risk of heart attack and stroke, improves blood flow to the brain and brain function, and has cancer-protective properties.
